SmartWatt Energy Delivers Energy Savings to Keyco; UGI Utilities Provides Large Incentive

Scranton, PA—October 15, 2012—Keyco, a privately owned wholesale distributor of grocery products, is expected to save $31,000 per year in total lighting costs after an energy-efficient SmartLighting installation in their distribution warehouse in Hanover Township, PA. Keyco chose energy efficiency experts SmartWatt Energy, an energy efficiency firm located in Scranton, PA for the upgrade, which has shown an immediate savings of 78 percent in lighting energy usage.

This project came with an incentive from UGI utilities equal to $45,794, which is the first rebate check of its kind through UGI’s voluntary Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program for commercial and industrial customers. This program provides incentives of up to 80% for qualified energy-efficiency improvements at customer’s facilities. Indoor and outdoor lighting is included on the incentive list, in addition to occupancy sensors, motor upgrades and HVAC upgrades.

"The Keyco lighting retrofit is a prime example of the type of project that meets the requirements of UGI’s Commercial and Industrial Custom program criteria and provides significant benefits to the customer in terms of energy and cost savings. This is exactly what UGI had in mind when we voluntarily filed our Energy Efficiency & Conservation ("EE&C") Plan with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission," said Brian Fitzpatrick, Manager - Energy Efficiency Programs at UGI Utilities. "Energy savings projects like these not only provide the direct benefits to the customer, but also indirect benefits to all consumers. These indirect benefits include less stress on the environment due to less electricity generatoin and this reduced electricity generation in turn puts downward pressure on energy rates in general."

SmartWatt Energy conducted a construction-grade energy audit of the facility, including indoor and outdoor areas, then engineered a SmartLighting plan to replace the existing High Pressure Sodium and T-12 fluorescent lighting fixtures with energy-efficient T-8 fluorescent and LED lighting fixtures. Members of the media and Representative Gerald Mullery were invited to Keyco for the check presentation at an event held October 10th.

"We’re happy to help launch UGI’s voluntary Energy Efficiency & Conservation Program for commercial and industrial customers like Keyco," said Tony Acernese, General Manager-Scranton Office of SmartWatt Energy. "Keyco has demonstrated leadership in energy efficiency in this region and it was a pleasure to work with them."

The SmartLighting installation is designed to remove pollutants from the air and is estimated to have the same effect on the environment as removing 475,976 pounds of greenhouse gases or the equivalent of saving 28,847 gallons of gasoline each year, according to U.S. Environmental Protection agency calculations.

SmartWatt Energy Completes Energy-Efficient LED Lighting Upgrades at NOR-AM Cold Storage Logistics

Chicago, IL—February 29, 2012—SmartWatt Energy has helped NOR-AM Cold Storage Logistics achieve savings of 218,761 kilowatt hours at their facility in Schuyler, NE after a LED lighting retrofit.

Representatives from Cornhusker Public Power District were at NOR-AM on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 to present a $24,016.08 incentive check for the energy efficient lighting upgrades. The funds are made possible through the EnergyWise program offered by Cornhusker Power partnered with its power supplier, Nebraska Public Power District.

"Upgrading technology and generating energy savings is a win-win situation," said David Johnson, Plant Manager for NOR-AM Cold Storage Logistics. "The improvements are estimated to save more than $14,132 annually, which would pay for the project in 4 years."

SmartWatt Energy’s engineering team completed a detailed energy audit (DEA) at the facility, then proposed improvements which included 109 lights being retrofitted, a majority of which were metal halides, to LEDs. Occupancy sensors were added to most of the lights, resulting in additional energy savings. LED lighting technology introduces very little heat into the facility, which is an added benefit for cold storage facilities and results in additional “coincidence cooling.”

"Our goal is to support our customers to become more efficient," said Karen Schlautman, Marketing Director for Cornhusker Public Power District. "Lighting technologies developed during the past 10 years can help cut lighting costs 30 to 60 percent, while enhancing lighting quality and reducing environmental impacts."

According to EPA estimates, the energy savings solution designed by SmartWatt Energy for NOR-AM Cold Storage Logistics will save the equivalent of 151 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered annually by 32.2 acres of pine forests.

SmartWatt Energy Helps Albany Medical Center Save More Than $200,000 in Annual Energy Costs With Lighting Retrofit

Albany, NY—February 21, 2012—Albany Medical Center, the only academic health sciences center in Eastern New York and Western New England is saving more than $200,000 per year in total utility costs after a lighting retrofit installed by SmartWatt Energy, a nationwide energy efficiency firm headquartered in Albany, NY.  The new energy efficient lighting will save 2,006,283 kWh of electricity per year.

Albany Medical Center received a grant for $759,608 to fund this project under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), which allowed the project to be completed with essentially no out of pocket cost.  ARRA funding was established to save and create jobs, spur economic activity and encourage investments towards long-term growth in the United States.  The Act provides funding for investments in infrastructure, education, health, and energy.

SmartWatt Energy conducted a construction-grade energy audit of various Albany Medical Center buildings throughout New York’s Capital Region, including: clinics, garages, offices and teaching buildings, then engineered a solution to replace the existing High Intensity Discharge (HID) and T-12 fluorescent lighting system with an energy-efficient T-5 and T-8 fluorescent lighting system.  T-12 fluorescent lighting will be phased out of production by July 2012, making the replacement a timely project.

“Albany Medical Center was one of the largest projects we’ve completed here in the Capital District, and more indicative of the national accounts projects this office engineers throughout the country,” explained Matt Sorbero, General Manager of SmartWatt Energy’s Albany, NY office. “We expect to complete more comprehensive energy-efficiency projects of this magnitude in the area in 2012, since our mechanical engineering group is now headquartered in this office.”

The Albany Medical Center energy savings project has removed pollutants from the air and will have the same effect on the environment as removing 3,046,931 pounds of Carbon Dioxide or planting 446 acres of trees.  SmartWatt Energy has hired aggressively in the Capital District over the last year to support the increased demand for energy efficiency projects in the area.

Commercial & Industrial T-12 Lighting Production to End Completely, July 2012

The U.S. Department of Energy has issued a mandate that as of July 1, 2010, magnetic ballasts, most commonly used for the operation of T-12 lamps, will no longer be produced for commercial and industrial applications. T-12 lamps themselves will be phased out of production beginning July 2012.

T-12 fluorescent lighting systems are being phased out because T-12 lamps and magnetic ballasts are considered outdated compared to the far more energy-efficient T-8 and T-5 fluorescent technologies now available. The Department of Energy’s objective is to remove less efficient T-12 fluorescent systems from the market, thereby increasing lighting efficiency for organizations.

With rebates and financing offers available for upgrading to an energy efficient lighting system, now is a great time to upgrade. While there is currently no set expiration date for most T-8 and T-5 fluorescent lighting retrofit rebates, policies do vary with each utility. These programs are approved and regulated by the local public utilities commission to promote overall energy efficiency. When funding for these programs runs out, the programs end quickly and, often, with little notice.

If you have T-12 lighting in your facility, it is in your best interest to begin making plans for a lighting retrofit now to secure rebate funds. SmartWatt Energy project engineers will design a lighting plan to maximize all applicable rebates. The cost of making the transition from T-12 to T-8 or T-5 technology will vary depending on your facility and lighting needs, but businesses can typically expect a one to three year payback period for lighting retrofits, and energy savings can be as high as 45%. Your SmartWatt Energy auditor and project engineer will provide detailed cost, savings and payback information in your final proposal.

Contact your SmartWatt Energy project engineer or one of our energy auditors at 1-888-348-0080 to learn more about the lighting efficiency rebates available to your business.
